The Decline of a Nation

The Decline of a Nation

We are heading towards a tyrannical type of government.  Some say we are already there-and the mask of the real face of this government has not been completely removed yet.  If you are just remotely paying attention you can see we are losing our freedoms and being subjected to more laws, more scrutiny, more surveillance, ever increasing taxes, out of control debt, civil strife, a government that is increasingly out of touch with the population.

We (as a population) are being censored on the internet courtesy of Google, facebook, twitter, and you tube to name a few.  We are being lied to by the MSM, visa distorting the facts, omission of fact that go against their narrative or are told outright falsities.  And they are not trying too hard to cover it up anymore.

Then there is our illustrious government with the lies about the wars (in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Russia, North Korea, China, Yemen, Saudi Arabia).  Lies about the health of the economy.  Lies about the government spending, immigration, islam, LGBTQRSTUVXWYZ……, the manipulation of financial markets, the total hijacking of education, not to mention the manipulation of social issues.

Ever wonder why?  To start with, Chesterton, who wrote “Christendom in Dublin” (1932) said this, “Once abolish the God, then the government becomes God”.  I believe the federal government has been consolidating and expanding its power for many decades.  It seems that onslaught has been accelerating over the years.

We now have roughly 35 million people in this country who work for government whether as direct employees or in a contractor capacity.  We have over 110 million people on some sort of government assistance and now there is talk of a universal wage (translation: welfare handout) that seems to be gaining steam.  Note: look at the people who are pushing this-liberals like Zuckerberg, Pelosi and some Hollywood idiots. The 110 million does not include all the illegals coming in and immediately getting on some sort of government assistance.  So, we are talking roughly one third to half of the population in the US that is dependent on the government for survival.  That is a lot of control the federal government holds.  One way to enslave a population, is to make it dependent on the government with entitlements and welfare.  This has been going since LBJ’s “Great Society” and before this, in many other ways. However, the GS program federalized it.

Why are we in this situation?

We have learned from history that all of the great Empires rose and fell.  From the biblical times to the more modern period of our time, the pattern is always the same.  A small, group of people scratched and clawed their way to overthrow an oppressor, a rival or through new advancements of war or technology in which that developing society was able to utilize it to conquer and expand their lands.  At some point, they became the empire, the major superpower of its day.  With this empire came advancements in all fields of science, art, political, society and wealth abounded.  But at some point, there was a down turn and the society started to decay.  Slowly at first, but then it accelerated.  However, very few of the population of the empire seem to notice, at least at first.  Then more realized that something was wrong, but at a loss to know what it was and more at a loss to know how to fix it.  Eventually the empire is conquered.  Below is a graph that summarizes this cycle:

This graphic was created by Alexander Tytler, a Scottish historian, writer, judge (born 1747-died 1813).

Tytler believed that democratic forms of government such as those of Greece and Rome have a natural evolution from initial virtue toward eventual corruption and decline. In Greece, for example, Tytler argues that “the patriotic spirit and love of ingenious freedom … became gradually corrupted as the nation advanced in power and splendor”.

Speaking about the measure of freedom enjoyed by the people in a republic or democracy, Tytler wrote, “The people flatter themselves that they have the sovereign power. These are, in fact, words without meaning. It is true they elected governors; but how are these elections brought about? In every instance of election by the mass of a people—through the influence of those governors themselves, and by means the most opposite to a free and disinterested choice, by the basest corruption and bribery. But those governors once selected, where is the boasted freedom of the people? They must submit to their rule and control, with the same abandonment of their natural liberty, the freedom of their will, and the command of their actions, as if they were under the rule of a monarch”.

He also wrote:

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”

“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

  • From bondage to spiritual faith;
  • From spiritual faith to great courage;
  • From courage to liberty;

Whether you agree with the time lines assigned to each cycle of Tytler’s graph, the point is we are heading in the downward spiral as so many nations and empires before us.

One can draw a pretty distinct parallel with the USA and the Roman Empire.  Not hard to imagine since many of our laws, institutions, political systems and many other things have derived from Rome.

In the book, “When Nations Die”, by Jim Nelson Black, the author points there is a social decay, a cultural decay and a moral decay.  Broken down, the Social decay reflected by the crisis of lawlessness, loss of economic discipline and a rising bureaucracy.  The Cultural decay is reflected by the decline of education, weakening of cultural foundations, loss of respect for traditions and an increase in materialism.  The Moral decay is reflected by the rise of immorality, the decay of religious belief and the devaluing of human life.

The author proceeds to show how these points were present in the Roman way of life and  how they are present in the American society.  He also points out that when a society is in decline, the more vulgar it becomes.  Many historians agree, that the destruction of the family unit, in any society, undermines that society and creates a fracturing of that society.

So Tytler, Black and many other scholar/historians quoted in his book, talk about this cycle and its seemingly inevitability.  Is it an organic process in which government, for example, just becomes this bloated bureaucracy that begins to oppress its population via high taxation, restrictive laws, devaluation of money, removal of freedoms, intense paranoia in order to maintain its existence?  Or, is it artificially induced, in the case of the USA, for other purposes?  One can make an argument for either case.  Either way, the end of society, as we once knew it, is coming.

So, what to do about it?  If it is inevitable, then may as well get some popcorn, soda and get ready for the show.  I would like to recommend something more proactive.

History has shown if a nation comes together and changes its ways, the nation can stave off this inevitability.  There are many examples of this such Nineveh, the capital city of Assyria, Israel in her history, Greece facing an invasion from Persia, kingdoms in Europe.  It can be done, but we need to come together.  However, to start, you need to get yourself and your household in order.  As I stated in a previous article, “Are You Prepared”, you need to get your spiritual house in order both individually and at a family level.  Our nation is spiritually sick, and this is one sure way to remedy that by getting yourself right.  Right with what?  Right with God.  Yep, going there again.  Because it is the only important thing right now.  You need to get right with God by asking for his forgiveness and asking his Son Jesus into your heart.  It is a free gift and a very simple thing to do.  You do NOT have to clean yourself up or get perfect.  He wants you as you are, right now.  Let Him start cleaning up the mess in you.  We all need it, but we cannot do it by ourselves.  It is going to get a whole worse before it will get better and you need the hope and peace only He provides.
